HERE'S WHAT PEOPLE IN BRUSSELS AND AROUND TOLD US...

> Check out the Brussels Group on Koinobio’s online Gallery !

We are receiving very positive feedback, people are super excited all the time especially with the clementines and oranges. There is always concern that fruit may look small and not ripe enough or that there may be some spoiled fruits on arrival. But in the end people have been very happy.

Our challenges is that the truck can be delayed and arrive past midnight or a few days late. For Nicolas the group organizer the process is very complex since he rents a trailer and he takes it to center to an urban garden where the fruit is. So delays can be very challenging. Nicolas also delivers to Agnes in Germany then crosses Luxembourg often with huge traffic and stormy weather. It is always good when there are other volunteers to help with unloading since its a community effort!

The group has been growing from word of mouth and we now have a second group in Nivelle, south of Brussels ordering through us.

Last improvement was the setting up of an online purchase platform as of January 2022, a tool that will save a great deal of time for the organizers compared to the spreadsheats manual processing, and hopefully will enable our group to grow in numbers, and most importantly, to continue support our farmer friends in Greece!”

When Participants were told in an email that fruits prices would be increased by 25 cents as of January 2022, to help the cooperative face the gas and energy spike, this is some of the comments they had:

Myriam

“I am with you 100%, thanks for the info and all you do… always with a good mood.”

Thierry

“Cheers Nico for the cleat explanation. No problem to increase the prices. We could also make a solidarity pot for those who could not afford the raise.”

Tessa’s orangettes’ sticks

Tessa (Bruxelles)

Here are a few pîctures of our “orangettes” : my son Jad and me found a new way to use the skin of oranges after we tested the cold-candied zests and dried-up skins (both recipes are amazing by the way!)
Here we made a hot sugar syrup “augmented” for 2 days. These oranges are REALLY TOO GOOD!!! The “Orangettes” as well. A bit too juicy still, to be preserved in the fridge but delicious. I also started on a cold-candied one (alternating sugar and skins sticks).
Cheers to make it possible for us to taste those fruits, thanks for your warm follow-up and next time you see your producer friends, please senb our friendship! Tessa (Brussels)

Brice (Bruxelles)

Oranges, Lemons and olive oil : absolutely divine! Seem to have come straight from Olympus ! Will you tell them ? Chantal (Brussels)

Marion (Bruxelles)

Delicious! My favorite are the oranges. Savored in slices for New Year’s Eve, with a bit of cinamon. Fruits came very nice, and the weight was generous. Thank you all and happy new Year! Marion (Brussels)

Yassas ! Jeannine (Bruxelles)

Yassas! Oranges are excellent, a treat! I’ll be back for next order. If possible avoid too big fruits with thick skin. Bravo to the grower, courage and Happy new Year 2019. Evakaristo ! (Jeannine, Brussels)

A group in Brussels (Belgium) discusses the situation in the Corinth Region after two members visited Antonis on his farm (November 2018), and suggest ways to compensate for the brutal increase in water cost after a severe drought

[FYI draught stroke hit hard on the Corinthian Region this year, and some rich guys profited a good deal by getting their hands on property with wells to sell water at the price of gold (25€ for 10 minutes watering!) to farmers, when water public service is failing and mainly serves seafront residences (secondary residence or appartments rented to tourists. Speculation…]

[In short, even if Antonis is intending to keeping the same price level, I told him I would propose you to contribute to this extra burden, either by raising the price per kilo, or by making a voluntary donation. Personnally I’d rather the last, so as not to put more pressure on modest incomes who already make the effort to participate in this solidarity export. What do you think?]

[Draught and infestations also affected olive trees the hard way : the farmer will lose 90% of his production this year, and according to him the remaining 10% will not match the usual quality on top of that! Hence : he found himself a third job as a bartender…]

[Another perverse side effect of draught and speculation : it’s becoming hard for Antonis and his fellow farmers to promote a good cooperation in a solidarity spirit, it’s rather everyone looking for himself, with fear as a background, fear of investing time, energy and money in a collaborative project without a guarantee of success. Fear is taking over and presses for isolation. This makes Antonis sad, who does everything he can to show in real life and practice that only solidarity is the key. I found him very happy we came to see him, we and a delegation of the French AMAP which started to import fruits as well last year, but at the same time affected, not to say depressed by this whole situation…]

(Muriel)

Thanks for your message and for those news (not so good) from the Greek front. OK for a voluntary additional contribution for us. (Muriel)

(Pascale)

What a story… Thanks for letting us know about their struggles and evolutions. At least we’re not just consuming like idiots. As to the price, I think the consummer should be in solidarity with natural risks. The part of the income devoted to food is only decreasing. And those who produce it, if they’re not multinationals, they ‘re not paid enought. (Pascale)

Oui, on soutien et on commande! En plus elles étaient délicieuses! (Chantal)

Yes, we support and we order! And they were so delicious those oranges! (Chantal)

(Iadine)

To address your question regarding compensating the costs, I incline also towards a voluntary contribution at the beginning, and we could change the system later if you see it doesn’t cover the cost increase for the producer. (Iadine)

(Manon)

I think proposing an extra contribution for the producers is actually a good idea! If we wish to give more, how can we proceed ? (Manon)

I’m more in favor of increasinf the price per kilo, but if you were to decide for the 2nd option, it would be fine by me 🙂 (Laura)

(Michel)

Thanks and yes the situation is really sad in Greece, also on a psychological level, all because the other European coutries (Germany first) denied solidarity. (Michel)

(Olivia)

What a shame for Antonis, I’m really sorry to hear that times are so harsh… Personnally, even if I hear the argument for a voluntary contribution, I found it logical that the price reflects the production cost. Otherwise it has a “charity” connotation to it. So no issue raising the price per kilo. (Olivia)

Regarding the price, I don’t know what would be fair, but here’s my proposition: given the difficulties you pointed out for Antonis and the farmers in the area, I’d suggest to support bu rounding up to 4€ a kilo for oranges, and 4,50€ for clementines. (Michaël)

This month is another landmark in BXL’s group history : back to an online shop @ https://bxl.koinobio.eu ! A time saving, easy to use platform by Phoenix Cart.
Amazing fruits this January 2022, me love bergamotes 🙂
Longing for the lovely avocadoes though, and we’re missing Areti’s Galini mix…
Distribution was quite hectic, as Kristina was too busy with her work to help me out, as the truck came one day earlier than expected, the platform export still need some improvement, requiring some thinking when distributing lots of 3-kg for most of the fruits while Bergamotes were purchased by the kilo. Lots of errors this month, we’ll do better in February.
Fortunately, thanks to Karim, Alice, Omar, Alain, Adinda, Bénédicte, Ngagne and Claire, we managed both distribution dates 🙂

Yep, oranges and grapefruits were excellent, but the avocados were particularly good. Any hope to get more of these ?
